Few days ago, my free hosting at Byethost got suspended. My account was accused for being involved in a botnet stuff that I don’t even have any idea how was that possible. Being suspended twice (suspended a year ago, same month), I now finally move away from Byethost.
Overview
I only got a portfolio site and a blog site on my website. I own the domain and hooked it up to Byethost’s free hosting for more almost 3 years already. Last July 2010, when my blog gets a moderate traffic (from low traffic) my previous account was suspended (that was using a different domain). I managed to rescue my two years worth of posts and moved them temporarily to Freehostia.
Since Freehostia that time was too restrictive and uses old software like Apache 1.3.x, I moved back to Byethost but using a different account and later on a new domain. Time passes too fast and I get back the traffic lost due to the change of domain.
Not until a day ago that my account is suspended again. This time, they didn’t re-activate my account and ended up giving me the backups. I have no choice but move along and perhaps buy a decent hosting.
Back to Freehostia
For the mean time, I managed to migrate my blog and portfolio to Freehostia. There are several hurdles but their compressed file upload and auto-extract did the trick (and was cool) since they was too limiting in terms of FTP transfer. It times out every now and then and it is impossible to even upload a complete website in a single batch.
Another problem was the Apache version 1.3.x which limits me to add the usual rewrite and htaccess rules that was a cool feature in Byethost. Nevertheless, the result is still acceptable.
(By the way, I’m a long time Freehostia (free account) the time where everyone is still using PHP 4).
Will be buying a hosting space a month or two from now.
